Curator's Statement:

The last twenty years of living with HIV/AIDS has been eye-opening for me. This is an understatement. As understated as my own Fading Ad Campaign project has been, many other visual artists’ perspectives on their own experiences with mortality can also be characterized as bold and courageous – though most often - subtle reminders of the lessons we have learned living in a liminally defined existence. These are the stories of survival. Living two decades with this expectancy has opened a dialogue with others who have been diagnosed with chronic illness other than HIV/AIDS. These artists’ stories tell a familiar visual tale. I’ve taken the liberty to include artists in this World AIDS Day Without Art event who have grappled with their own mortality and have chosen to use art as a vehicle to teach.
