In April of 2000, my friend Andy Hughes (Knopf) took me to Belize for my 40th birthday. Thanks Andy! Here is my PADI license ID photo. I will post images I took in Belize sporadically rather than grouping them.

The back of William Penn’s grave and the holly were taken in Old Jordans. The images of Dr. Irving and myself were taken on the campus of the University of London in the same week in March 2001.

Thanks Dr. Andrew Irving!

For sale: Old Jordans and the Mayflower barn – preview

After nearly 100 years of Quaker ownership, the Old Jordans hotel and conference centre has been put on the market.

The sale package also includes the stable block, which was recently converted into a modern refectory, and the beautiful and historic Mayflower barn, reputedly built from the timbers of the ship that took the Pilgrim Fathers to the New World. The whole complex is expected to sell for around £2.5 million.

The property has been a part of Quaker life since as early as 1659 when William Russell, the owner of the land and a local farmer, held the first Quaker Meetings in the area. Also present at many of these early Meetings were George Fox, James Nayler and William Penn. The buildings passed out of Quaker ownership in 1738 but were reacquired in 1910 in a derelict state and converted into the guest house as we know it today.

I recently received this touching e-mail from a woman who lost her brother to complications due to HIV/AIDS (lymphoma). Click on Robin’s image above to view her blog. Here is her note:

Interesting way to find a webpage-I had a dream last night that I was a little kid again (I’m 47 so still a kid, but barely) and for some odd reason Fletcher’s Castoria was in it. I thought it was cod liver oil or something but determined to look it up once I got to work and I ended up on your site.

I do believe I was supposed to end up here.

I lost my brother Clay, 2 months ago to Lymphoma which was related to his HIV + status. http://meot.shutterchance.com/photoblog I am having trouble getting back into my life and excepting his death and I guess I need some celebration. You’re that celebration Frank and I thank you. Your site envelopes my love of history and photography, my insane desire to someday visit NY, my love of brother and now, you. Yay! and thanks. So much.

Now I want to go home and spend all day looking at your site.

Much love to you Frank

Brandon Palacio in Namibia

Frank,

I did it! I did it! I survived 7 days trekking the Namibian desert to raise money for HIV/AIDS research! Thank you for your support. Here are my pics of the trek, and some animals we saw along the way.

Hope you are well.

Best,
Brandon

BRANDON!  So proud of you. Your images are truly breathtaking. What a transforming experience that must have been.

Best,
Frank

Hallelujah – Jerry's Dead

And I don’t think Ben & Jerry’s will be naming an ice-cream flavor after the Reverend Falwell. So ends a fount of hypocrisy and homophobic ranting. Good riddens to “hate disguised as love.”

Scott- At first I was going to use this blog as a trial to just play with ideas of what I would do for a classroom blog and I’ve decided to use this blog as an educational tool. I’m busy writing the actual “paper” but this posting could serve as an abstract. I want this Fading Ad Blog to address many of the different issues I have with today’s curriculum. One of them is the poor attempt on the Department of Education to administer a meaningful and informative HIV/AIDS curriculum that will really educate students about safe behaviors. Additionally, I will integrate Science, New York Studies, World Studies, Mapping Skills, and Art & Photography, as well as Memoir as a Personal Document. Right now, I teach second through fifth grade but this new certification will be K-12. Eventually I would like to teach older students, having already taught middle school. I’m enjoying elementary and it will be a challenge to tailor this blog to address perhaps a fourth grade curriculum and keep it age appropriate. I think I am going to have fun with this one.
