Day 1: Chapters 1-4 (January 11th, 2010)

Visit Marriage Trial dot com for further exhibits and resources!

ABOUT THE MARRIAGE TRIAL PROJECT (taken from their website):

In its January 13, 2010 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the public broadcast of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a U.S. District Court case challenging the constitutional validity of California’s Proposition 8.

Working from court transcripts and first-hand accounts from bloggers who are present at the trial, we are re-enacting the trial and posting it here for public viewing.

John Ireland and John Ainsworth are co-producing this project under JIP, LLC a production company based in Hollywood.

For more information: email them, follow them on Twitter or subscribe to their YouTube channel.

Production Costs

“If you support what we are doing, please consider contributing, to help us cover costs. All of the actors, producers and others behind the scenes are volunteering our time and our resources are limited. Your gift will help us to complete our work. Thanks!” – Marriage Trial dot com

MarriageTrial.com profiled on Bill Moyers Journal

They battled it out as legal adversaries in 2000 before the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. But what’s got these two prominent lawyers – one conservative and one liberal – working together in court now? Theodore Olson, one of the nation’s premier appellate and United States Supreme Court advocates and David Boies, one of the country’s preeminent trial lawyers, argued opposite sides for the fate of the 2000 election but are now teamed up in the fight to overturn California’s Proposition 8 ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage. The unexpected pair discusses why they’ve taken on the hot-button issue – even as some gay rights activists objected – and why they don’t believe that same-sex marriage is a right or left issue. Thirty years ago, homos had a heart on for promiscuity and the right wing vilified us. Today homos have a heart on for monogamy and marriage and the right wing vilifies us. Let’s face it. They don’t like us. We’re here, we’re queer – get on with it!

Rotten to the core © Vincenzo Aiosa

I think it is really Rotten that we are still not allowed to get married in New York State- thanks to a bunch of Republican Assholes in Albany. Also adding to the list of assholes are the Democrats who voted against the bill included Sens. Joseph Addabbo, Shirley Huntley, George Onorato and Hiram Monserrate of Queens, Carl Kruger of Brooklyn, Ruben Diaz Sr. of the Bronx, Darrel Aubertine of the North Country, and William Stachowski of the Buffalo area. – Vincenzo Aiosa – Rantourage

Frank Jump and Vincenzo Aiosa got married on Valentine’s Day, February 14th 2004 in Toronto, Canada.

Thank you Equal Marriage Canada, The Great City and People of Toronto, The Honorable Justice Harvey Brownstone and his partner Marty, and Brendan Fay and Jesús Lebrón!

We actually “met” around twenty years ago but our first date was 18 years ago today. So many firsts to count for anniversaries. This was our first Pride March together in June 1990. So Fellini-esqe.

Italian American Newspaper Covers Gay Wedding on Valentine's Day
“Happy Valentine’s Day: Love is For Everyone!”

Four years ago today when the rest of LGBTQ America was flocking to San Francisco to get married on that fateful Valentine’s Day Weekend, seven American couples decided to go to Toronto where the law was enacted and not likely to be rescinded any time soon. Although most of the SF same-sex marriages were later deemed null and void (sorry Rosie O’Donnell), the weddings still took place and the memories persist. Hopefully the relationships still do as well. Statistically, same-sex marriages last longer that opposite sex marriages. Vincenzo and I have been co-habitating for almost 18 years. This June is our anniversary for our first date.

Our marriage was televised live from Vancouver to Nova Scotia in the morning of February 14, 2004. The ceremony was conducted by The Honourable Judge Harvey Brownstone. Later, there was a reception at City Hall thrown by the Mayor of Toronto David Miller and his staff. We were followed all around town (even into our hotel room) by the local paparazzi.
