Snakefly (Raphidioptera) – Amersfoort, NL – Lowlands Correspondent, Gaia Son

Snakeflies are a group of insects comprising the order Raphidioptera, consisting of about 210 extant species. Together with theMegaloptera they were formerly placed within the Neuroptera, but now these two are generally regarded as separate orders.

Snakeflies are predatory, both as adults and larvae. They can be quite common throughout temperate Europe and Asia, but in North America occur exclusively in the Western United States, namely in the Rocky Mountains and westward, including the southwestern deserts.

Adult snakeflies are characterized by having an elongate prothorax but no modification of the forelegs (as in Mantispidae). They have strong and relatively unspecialised mouthparts, and large compound eyes. Some species also have ocelli. The females typically have a long ovipositor, which they use to deposit their eggs into crevices in bark or rotting wood. The wings are similar in size, with a primitive venation pattern, and a thickened costal margin (or “pterostigma”). – Wikipedia

Brasserie Wielemans-Ceuppens – Brouwerij Wielemans Ceuppens – Brewery – Brussel, BE – Lowlands Correspondent, Gaia Son

Former brewery is now the Contemporary Art Center in Brussels © Gaia Son

Spread over a century, from 1880 to 1980, the history of Wielemans-Ceuppens…merges with that of the beer industry in Belgium: exponential growth, constant adaptation to modern technology and demand market purchase of competing breweries followed by absorption by a larger, decline and closure. In 1978 the brewery was taken over by Stella Artois. The business was phased out from 1980 and on September 29, 1988 the last Wieleman Beer was brewed. The Centre was opened in 2007 in the old [Deco] building for contemporary art, after restoration and renovation works were started in 2005. – Wikipedia

Wilde Hazelnoten Uit Amersfoort! – Wild Hazelnuts From Amersfoort NL! – Gaia Son

Apparently while Gaia was harvesting almost five kilos of hazelnuts that are growing wild in her picturesque medieval town of Amersfoort in the Netherlands, the generally aloof Turkish immigrants were  eager to comment to her about the hazelnuts of Turkey. No wonder!

The top producer of hazelnuts, by a large margin, is Turkey, specifically Giresun Province and Ordu. Turkish hazelnut production of 625,000 tonnes accounts for approximately 75% of worldwide production. Nutella consumes 25% of global supply. – Wikipedia

Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997), better known by his stage names The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie or Biggie Smalls, was an American rapper. – Wikipedia

Had he not been killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, Biggie would have been 42. Another great shot of this mural can be seen on Not A Queens Photo Blog [http://bit.ly/Z2X0Gq].
