On Saturday, I was able to attend 3 open house NY events. The 1st was a walk through Chelsea to rediscover old NYC and the fading ads that silently adorn to the buildings as people passby without ever noticing them. The handpainted signs/ads that cling onto these old buildings tell a great story on the history of our city! Photographer, author, and NYC Historian – Frank Jump led the talks and walks with much enthusiasm & knowledge! Checkout Frank’s book & blog called ‘Fading Ads of New York City‘. He seems to have a great passion in unearthing the New York of yesteryear by discovering and examining old signs and the businesses they were representing.

A One-Year Anniversary of Fading Ads of New York City (History Press, 2011) by Frank Jump – The First 10,000 Book Review
You could blame Robert Moses, which seems to be the fashion, or you could say it’s just the American way, that unique form of active amnesia we seem to have that means forgetting vast swaths of our history, and either painting over or demolishing the rest; either way, huge amounts of our urban landscape have been “made new” and made over, with much history — architectural and cultural — being lost along the way. We can see those faded fingerprints around us still, sometimes in lingering architectural details on the buildings that have survived one renewal or gentrification too many, and other times in the faded, hand-painted signs that cling stubbornly to those same buildings.
That brings us to Fading Ads of New York City, written by Frank Jump, the curator of the long-running Fading Ad website. I’ve lost track of how many websites have spawned books in the last few years, and how many of those books I’ve passed up because I couldn’t see myself reading them more than once, regardless of how many times the website in question made me laugh, made me think, or gave me goosebumps. With that said, I was very happy to come across this book, which takes some of Jump’s best shots and writing, and puts the lot of it between covers. – Read more @ The First 10000 Reviews Fading Ads of New York City by Frank Jump.

In this issue of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY go behind the magic of ABC’s hit fairy-tale mash-up Once Upon a Time, including which classic characters might be coming to Storybrooke in the future. Plus, Hollywood Design Report, highlighting the talent creating sets, props, and costumes for Once, Les Miserables, Glee, Skyfall, Boardwalk Empire, and more.
SET OF GLEE: DISTRESSING DETAILS
After an exhaustive search, set decorator Robert Kensinger found the janitor’s sink at an L.A.-area salvage yard and paired it with a beat-up cabinet. Though he added crystal glassware from H.D. Buttercup and artwork by Frank Jump and Gérard Uféras, Kensinger was careful not to over-decorate. “As time goes on, things will change, as if Kurt and Rachel went out and bought things or shopped at a flea market,” he says. Apparently, a photo of mine and a watercolor by Sandra Walker from my book The Fading Ads of New York City (History Press, 2011) that are used for a set in the latest season of Glee are being featured in this week’s EW! Just ordered them online. Can’t wait to read the article.

Fading ads of Tribeca, New York – Vida London Blog
Last Sunday, as part of Open House New York Weekend, we joined a walking tour of the faded ads of Tribeca.

A good 70 people turned up in the drizzle to follow the tour by local photographer and blogger Frank Jump, who since 1997 has specialised in capturing the fading advertisements, or ghost signs, of New York.
