Frans Ludwig Broekveldt & Gatske de Jong – Marriage License – April 27, 1904 – Amsterdam Historic Museum – State Archives – Death Notice of Frans Broekveldt III

Marriage license of my maternal great grandfather & grandmother (Netherlands)

Marriage license of my maternal great grandfather & grandmother (Netherlands)

Today I received a comment from an old friend of my uncle’s. Rudy Leine wrote me this message about my uncle:

Frans and I had been very good friends. We had the nicknames Ghandy and Goof  when we were about 16 to 18 years old. I live in Brazil for many and many years. These days I was remembering him and started an Internet search and found this page. Frans – I will meet you in the future, thanks that you have been my friend.
Goof

This led me to do another search myself of my maternal grandfather’s name (Frans Broekveldt) and I discovered that a Dutch museum in Amsterdam is using my great grandfather’s and grandmother’s marriage license as an example of turn-of-the-century marriage documents.

The exhibition is called Bronnen uit Amsterdam (Sources from Amsterdam). Below are the accompanying materials from the website.

“Rekening” from our last meal together with my mother at a local Chinese restaurant.

My maternal uncle, Frans Broekveldt III died in his sleep over the weekend in his new home in Badhoevendorp, Amsterdam. Frans was survived by his wife Dickey Broekveldt, two daughters Susan & Sonia, and his grand daughter Linsey and grand son Rick and his only sister Willy Broekveldt-Jump. Condolences may be sent to the family Broekveldt – Azaleastraat 38, 1171WV, Badhoevendorp, Amsterdam, NL and Willy Jump, 1445 Geneva Loop 17E, Brooklyn NY 11239.

I’ll always remember him listening to his Ben E. King albums up in the attic bedroom on the Geuzenstraat. On occasion he would read to me from his thick oversized book about evolution or rail against the evil imperialist and racist America. He loved his motorcycle when he was riding it. He cherished his grandchildren and family.

Above is a picture of my great-grandmother with her second husband in costumes of the Volendam region of North Holland. I’m guessing this was taken after the war (WWII) circa 1948. Below is myself in typical Volendamse klederdracht or traditional clothing. I found a great website that gives audio examples of all of the dialects spoken in the Netherlands [www.meertens.knaw.nl/projecten/sprekende_kaart/svg/]. To my ear the differences are vast but to the unfamiliar ear, it may all sound like Dutch to you.

This posting is the first of a number of postings from the photos my mom dragged out of her closet. Out of the closet and into the scanner!

The Amersfoort, Netherlands & Amersfort, Brooklyn Partnership

In 2009 – The 400 Year Anniversary Henry Hudson Set Sail from Amsterdam & the 750th Anniversary of Amersfoort, NL

ANYtime-us.nl

Representatives from Amersfoort Netherlands contacted the Amersfort School of Social Awareness earlier this year to ask if we were interested in collaborating on a cultural exchange with the schools in the Amersfoort District in the Netherlands. Since our school had just become a Magnet School for Global & Ethical Studies and our $100,000 technology grant just came through, we were thrilled. We have met with the ANYtime-US-NL committee and have plans for our schools to collaborate on blog projects over this academic year culminating in a Cultural Fair in June 2009 to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the founding of Amersfoort, NL and the quadricentennial of Henry Hudson’s voyage to the New World from Amsterdam.

Last week, Koen Steenbergen & Sabine van Erkel came to visit our school and kicked off a cookie contest that was happening concurrently in the Netherlands. We talked about our historical connection with the Netherlands here in New York and Brooklyn and our future connection with “the two Amersforts.” With community support and careful planning, we could see a carnival-style celebration of the Hudson & Amersfoort Anniversaries right here in Avenue J’s Amersfort Park. Yet again, the Internet has brought us a little closer in this every-shrinking world. A Google search turned up our school and the Amersfoort group contacted us through my Board of Ed e-mail account. To the Amerfoort group’s surprise, I speak Dutch (and lived in Amsterdam as a child) and my colleague Jenny Hobson, has a Dutch connection through her boyfriend. Jenny went to Amersfoort earlier in the year to visit their school and brought back letters and drawings that were bound into a picture book made by their students.

Even though there is no particular date on which all the countries of the world celebrate Mother’s Day, but most of the countries celebrate it on the second Sunday of May. US President Woodrow Wilson declared this particular day as Mother’s Day in the year 1914, by signing a Joint Declaration. As per this declaration, Mother’s Day 2008 date turns out to be 11th of May.

However, a number of countries celebrate Mother’s Day on other days also. For example, in New Zealand, Mother’s Day falls on the first Sunday of May. Similarly, a number of countries celebrate Mother’s Day on days other then the second Sunday of May. Whatever be the day of celebration, the reason behind celebrating this day remain the same i.e., to say thanks to the most important person in our life – our mother. It is the day to tell her how much we love her and how special she is for us. – Festivals – I Love India – Mother’s Day
