Eastern Farmworkers Association – National Labor Federation – Syracuse, NY

© Vincenzo Aiosa

The organization grew out of the Eastern Farm Workers Association in Suffolk County, New York, founded in 1972 by Gino Perente and others. Perente had worked at the New York office of the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee in 1971 or 1972 and, according to Dolores Huerta, “…created a lot of problems for the union, attacking us in the press. Then he went off and formed his own group….NATLFED operates about thirty offices, called entities around the US, with concentrations in California and the Northeast. The Eastern Farm Workers Association (now in Bellport, New York and Syracuse, New York) and California Homemakers Association (in Sacramento, California) were founded in the early seventies, and were followed by Eastern Service Workers Association, Western Service Workers Association, the Commemoration Committee for the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California, Western Massachusetts Labor Action in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Western Farm Workers Association in Stockton, California, Yuba City, California, and Hillsboro, Oregon, Friends of Seasonal and Service Workers in Portland, Oregon and Northwest Seasonal Workers Association in Medford, Oregon.”Wikipedia

I had totally forgotten about it until my friend mentioned it yesterday. I love researching the old companies that are being advertised and reflecting on how much the city has changed over time.  Iman R. Abdulfattah

According to Relli Shechter in Smoking, Culture & Economy in the Middle East- The Egyptian Tobacco Market 1850 – 2000, Coutarelli was the only large-scale Greek producer for the Egyptian tobacco smoking market, opening its business immediately after 1890 [p.80, Shechter].  In early February 1918, cigarette roller strikes occurred in Alexandria where the company was located [p.89]. According to Shechter, Coutarelli…

…began machine production in 1922, when it bought its first three cigarette-making machines. In 1945, an article in La Reforme suggested that Coutarelli employed more than 5,000 persons in production and distribution, thus putting the percentage of persons employed in Coutarelli at slightly less than a third of the total number employed in the business.

Former U.S. Diplomat Henry Precht, who was chief of the Iran Desk at the US State Department during the years of the Revolution and the hostage crisis said the following in a March 8, 2000 interview conducted by Charles Stuart Kennedy for The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Foreign Affairs Oral History Project:

Coutarelli had been the cigarette king of Egypt and had died after marrying a rather disreputable, it was said, Italian lady whom the family disapproved of. She was afraid that her huge house with an immense garden right around the corner from the consulate would be taken away either by the Egyptian government or by her husband’s family. So, she rented it to an American vice consul for his housing allowance in order to safeguard it. And it worked, at least for us certainly.

Looks like two superimposed ads: the Arabic on the left is for a ceramic company; then there is a 7 Up ad in the upper right corner, plus more Arabic that seems unrelated to 7 Up but possibly the beginning of the ceramic company ad. – Iman R. Abdulfattah

7 Up was created by Charles Leiper Grigg, who launched his St. Louis–based company The Howdy Corporation in 1920. Grigg came up with the formula for a lemon-lime soft drink in 1929. The product, originally named “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda”, was launched two weeks before the Wall Street Crash of 1929. It contained lithium citrate, a mood-stabilizing drug, until 1950. It was one of a number of patent medicine products popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.Wikipedia

Remembering Gerome Ragni – Vernal Equinox Arrives With The Age of Pisces Behind Us – The Age of Aquarius Slowly Transitions Ahead

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind’s true liberation
Aquarius! Aquarius!

From the musical “Hair” “Aquarius” was written by Gerome Ragni; James Rado; Galt Mac Dermot.

So we are mid-birthdays – Vincenzo & I are almost twins- born in the same astrological sign, in the same year and four days apart – the two fish keep swimming in their eternal circle. Gerome Ragni, who I called Gerry, was a regular of mine back in 1982 when I used to bartend with my ex Joe Fontana at a short-lived  Greenwich Village bar called Village Stix. Gerry used to come in with Rollerena and this bodybuilder friend who was the model for the Bulldog Gym posters (I forget his name). Gerry was a real character and already showing early signs of AIDS-related dementia. We would take long walks through Washington Square Park and he would tell me the same stories of when he was a younger man, writing one of the most seminal musicals in modern rock opera history. I listened to them as if I were hearing them for the first time. I was thrilled to be in his company.

It’s equinox time. The 2014 March equinox comes on Thursday, March 20 – at precisely 16:57 Universal Time. That’s the standard time in Greenwich, England, and it marks a single time for this equinox as noted from a whole-Earth perspective – when the sun stands directly overhead as seen from Earth’s equator. – Equinox 2014 comes before midday March 20 for most of U.S.

Pisces the Fishes is sometimes called the first constellation of the Zodiac because the sun appears in front of this constellation at the time of the March equinox. One tropical year is usually defined as the period of time between successive March equinoxes. So – in this sense – the March equinox marks the beginning of a new year. And that is why Pisces – backdrop to the sun on the March equinox – often appears as marking the starting point of the Zodiac.

In our time, the sun’s annual passage in front of the constellation Pisces is from about March 12 to April 19. Then the sun passes in front of the constellation Aries from about April 19 to May 14. – EarthSky

The Age of Pisces is over. Pisces values are being wiped out causing unprecedented change and upheaval in our lifetime. And, we’re not done yet. The Piscean values of money, power and control are being replaced. They do not resonate with the values of the new great cycle, the Age of Aquarius. Those values are love, brotherhood, unity and integrity….

….It’s taken science a long time to verify what ancient people have known for thousands of years. Ancient people such as the Hindus, Egyptians, Maya and Hopis, revered the higher powers and made understanding their existence their daily focus. They accepted the unknown and respected the divine. In fact  trying to understand the cosmos and how they affected them was their lives. Our ancient relatives understood the effects of cosmic alignments on the earth.

Modern scientists run everything through the senses and the scientific method. If it doesn’t pass the tests it isn’t real. But…that’s changing. Quantum Physics doesn’t follow the rules, because energy changes depending on who’s doing the experiment and what they were thinking about at the time.

Science has also verified what the Maya have been saying all along on their buildings and stelae about the coming alignments. When the Mayan Great Cycle, which coincides with the Age of Aquarius, changed on or around December 21, 2012, a world age shift to be a rise in spiritual consciousness should start to take hold.

Computers, satellites, and remote sensing equipment, enable scientists today to see the effects of past world ages and the changes they’ve brought to humanity. So, it doesn’t surprise them that we are going through the upheavals we are today. In fact they have verified that the Maya were dead on right about the alignment that came in 2012.Spiritual Growth Prophecies

This was from the very first time I went out to take pictures of painted ads! 1972, between April and June (can’t narrow it down any more than that). It was on 59th St. in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood — the ad is long gone. I had it digitized from an Instamatic print, which accounts for the quality. I’m glad you like it — I chose it especially for your birthday. – Marian Saska
