Bread is one of the oldest prepared foods, dating back to the Neolithic era. The development of leavened bread can probably also be traced to prehistoric times. – Wikipedia
At one time, Palagonia was the ONLY Italian bread you could buy at a corner deli. I wouldn’t call it the best anymore. Vincenzo is a fan (see Enzo’s View) of Cityline’s Rosa Maria Bakery & Deli on 101st Avenue – if you want a really good semolina bread. Another favorite of ours is Paneantico Bakery off 65th Street & 14th Avenue in Bensonhurst.

We are transplanted New Yorkers, (not the city,) and truly miss the Italian bread of the east coast. I find very little in the west to compare, although some artisan bakeries do try. Question: several years ago I ran across an Italian poem about bread that a bakery in Italy prints on each bread bag. I have since lost the poem and am hoping to find another copy. Can you help? Thanks for any leads you can give me.
BV – I haven’t heard of it but will ask around. My husband is the big bread eater and should know. Best, Frank
