Sort of strange that the sign has VIR.3 6308 on it; the three-letter prefixes preceded the use of the extra digit so it would have normally been VIR 6308 oe VI 3 6308. I wonder if the sign was painter in the very early 1930s, when people were still used to 3-letter prefixes.
In fact, VIR 6308 would have become VI 7 6308 in December 1930. The VIrginia 3 exchange did start in early 1931, so the sign may have been from about that time.
I grew up with the VI 8 exchange in Howard Beach. Prior to that we had the LA exchange out in Laurelton Queens.
