This is a large, heavy duty herringbone gear that was probably used to drive a tube mill at the John C. Wiarda chemical company on Green St. Herringbone gears have teeth formed in oppositely directed helixes. Their advantage is the internal absorption of axial thrust, which reduces pulsations, making the transmission of heavy loads more efficient.
Tube mills are rotating cylindrical mills used to grind ores to a fine particle size. Pebbles are used to accomplish the grinding inside the mill. Some of the inorganic chemicals made at the Wiarda Co. would have required ore milling as a first step in the process. The mineral ore fluospar was processed into several chemicals including sodium fluoride.
