“J.J. Friel Loans On Diamonds, Jewelry & Personal Property” – Broadway, Myrtle Avenue & Jamaica Avenue locations.
This series of Park Slope postings were taken on Sunday, February 10th, 2008 – An hour before the “Brooklyn Blogade” at Faan.
J.J. Friel was my Great grandfather. I would like to know if the sign you took on February 10, 2008 is still in existence…I would like to investigate whether it. Can be restored. I live in Detroit so cannot check myself. Thank you
I’m on my cell phone now but will reply later. I’m writing a book and your great grandfather is in it. There were JJ Friel signs all over Brooklyn and Queens. Talk later.
This one is in Park Slope. There are others on this site as well. One from Coney Island Avenue that is now covered will be in my book that is being published by History Press, hopefully in November. I would love any information you may have, my manuscript is due this Monday. Best, Frank
All I know is what has been told to me by family members. J.J. Friel died around 1913 when my Grandmother, Meryl Margaret Friel was 10 years old. My grandmother inherited millions ( from what I was told). Mary Margaret went on to graduate from Manhattanville College ( presumably in 1924) and married my grandfather Henry Mannix in 1926. Henry Mannix never met JJ obviously. Henry Mannix became a partner at White and Case ( a legendary wall street firm.). Henry and Mary Margaret had 10 children, nine of which lived to adulthood. My mother, Mary Margaret Mannix was their fifth child. I am the youngest of eight and one of 46 great grandchildren of JJ. Mary Margaret was his only child. Frances Noonan Friel was my great grandmother. Hope this helps in some way. Please let me know if you wish to speak further via phone.
Would love to talk.
Thanks, will call tomorrow.
