The Occident sign is an old sign that has been repainted. When the owner of the hardware store retired, he painted the building in aluminum. His old sign about 40 or so years old is starting to come through again. Cheers, Bob

This picture and the process of its resurgence speaks volumes.
The Occident sign was on a building on the south end of the block. TheThompson Hardware sign was painted over in 1995 when the store closed. Will I have to reopen the store when the sign can again be read? I think not. ct
It was great to find the photo here!
As the teenage daughter of the store owner, I believe I was the last one to paint the Thompson Hardware on the side of the store. I recall standing on an extension ladder for several days one summer in the late 1970s, refreshing the red paint on the letters. I was sad when Dad painted over the sign after closing the store. I appreciate the fact that my hard work is again showing its face!
CT & CN – I will tell Bob Kisken of your discovery of his photo. So glad to have you visit our blog!

I lived in the Belfield area in the 70s and have fond memories of the Thompson family and their store/home.
